The National Bank of Poland recently reported that terminal operators settled 2.1 billion contactless payments between October and December 2023. The largest banks in the market, surveyed by cashless.pl, boasted that their customers made 369.5 million contactless mobile payments during the same period. This means that around 17.6 percent of contactless transactions at POS were made using digital wallets, including the most popular, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Examining the data over a longer period, it becomes evident how mobile payments are reshaping the financial landscape. The share of mobile payments in contactless transactions at terminals has nearly tripled over the past three years, reaching 6.2 percent in Q4 2020, a testament to the transformative power of this technology.

Finally, it should also be added that there are even more mobile payments than cashless.pl data shows that their share of total terminal traffic is higher. This is because not all banks disclose their statistics on the popularity of Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc. This group includes, among others, PKO BP and ING.
